Assisted living vs. memory care in Colorado: what is and isn't the same?
In Colorado both are licensed by CDPHE as an Assisted Living Residence; memory care is an ALR (or a section of one) that also operates a secure environment for residents with dementia.
| Assisted living (ALR) | Memory care (ALR with a secure environment) | |
|---|---|---|
| State license | Is a CDPHE Assisted Living Residence license (6 CCR 1011-1, Chapter 7) | Is the same ALR license; it isn't a separate license type |
| Doors and exits | Isn't locked; residents come and go | Is a secure (locked or alarmed) environment under Chapter 7, Part 25 |
| Who it serves | Is for adults who need help with daily activities and medications | Is for residents whose dementia makes leaving unsafe |
| Medical care | Isn't skilled nursing; round-the-clock nurses aren't required | Isn't skilled nursing either: more supervision, not more medical care |
| In CDPHE's public data | Is listed with Facility ID, beds and inspection record | Isn't flagged separately; ask for the secure-environment disclosure |
| Typical Denver-metro cost (2026) | About $3,200–$5,800 a month | About $4,500–$7,800 a month |
Why does this directory use CDPHE data instead of reviews?
Because the state record is what every licensed residence has in common: an active license, a Facility ID, a licensed bed count and an inspection history. We do not publish star ratings, reviews or prices for individual facilities.
Our advisors use the same record when they help families compare options. Talk to one free.
